Mokuna was a pioneer in Belgian football and one of the first Black players in the league. He earned the nickname "Trouet" after kicking a ball so hard that it tore through the net. This artwork highlights his talent and resilience, while the cyclist on a pole symbolizes the racist comments and discrimination he endured. The colored figures playing football represent that the sport is for everyone, regardless of background. Mokuna remains an inspiration, not only for his achievements on the field but also for his perseverance and strength off it. This piece was created in collaboration with my cousin, Christophe Mertens, who is the artist behind the painting.
